FreshBox began as one frustrated home cook trying to fix dinner. It still is — we've just got a bigger kitchen and better cooks behind us.

Maya Chen, Founder
I wanted dinners that felt like the ones we remembered eating, not the ones we settled for.
It started in 2019, in a converted warehouse in Brunswick, with a chest freezer, a borrowed van, and thirty-two households who agreed to be the test customers. The first menu had four meals. I wrote the recipes. I packed the boxes. I drove the deliveries.
What I knew was that supermarket meals had taken something away — the connection between food and the people who grow it, the cooks who care about it, and the table you sit at. What I didn't know was how many other people felt the same. Within six months, we had a waitlist of two thousand. We've grown carefully ever since, but the rule has stayed: we only ship a meal we'd serve our own family.
Six years on, we're still small-batch in spirit. The team is bigger, the kitchens are nicer, and the menu rotates twenty meals a week — but every recipe still gets cooked, tasted, and signed off in a real home before it makes the box. That part isn't going anywhere.
Founder Maya Chen starts cooking from a converted Brunswick warehouse, hand-delivering meals to thirty-two households.
Bringing in chef David Pham from Tonka. Menus expand to twelve weekly recipes, all designed for home kitchens.
Cutting wholesalers entirely. Eighty percent of produce now comes from named farms within two hundred kilometres.
Now shipping across every Australian metro, still chef-designed, still small-batch in spirit.
Real food has a postcode. Most of what's in your box was harvested within a day's drive of your kitchen.
